Monitoring SQL Server activies from an outside environment

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place to post this kind of question (moderators, please move it to the right place if it's not here).

I want to know how can I monitor some operations that are executed on a SQL Server database. Operations like: INSERT, DELETE, UPDATE, transactions, and so on (I know that I can do this using triggers, but doing this way I'll have to fill a table with the information from the triggers and stay loading the table data all the time. I want a way to monitor using other resources, in realtime).

My idea is to build a program to monitor these activities (C# to be more exactly). How can I do this?

Thanks

SMO is a set of object libraries that allow you to manage SQL Server. What I think you're looking for is a transaction log sniffer, and I believe there are some good commercial products for that, SMO addresses an entirely different problem.|||

Allen, I know some commercial products, but I'm planning a project for my graduation degree.

|||I understand and wish you the best of luck. SMO doesn't have the objects to read the log pages, though. You might want to post a similar question in the Database Engine forum.|||I understand. Thanks for your patience.

Monitoring SQL Database

I am new to SQL environment and want to know if there is a way to monitor the
SQL database. I will like to be notify if the sql database is down and any
tables/database have been deleted. I am running SQL server 2000.
You can monitor the tables being dropped in various ways in SQL Server 2005,
but in SQL Server 2000 you are more limited to 3rd party tools eg Lumigent
Log Explorer (http://www.lumigent.com/products/le_sql.html).
For the server being up, you could create an app to use OLEDB to poll the
server, telnet to ping the port or use a monitoring tool eg

MOM Reporting Configuration Query?

My current environment is as follows:
MOM 2005 SP1 Frontend & DAS
MOM 2005 SP1 Frontend
MOM 2005 SP1 DB w/ SQL 2000 SP4
SQL Reporting Services 2000 w/ MOM 2005 SP1 Reporting Pack
Will applying SQL 2000 RS SP2 break MOM reporting? No it won't. Whilst the RTM MOM Reporting install complains if RS SP2 is
installed when you try and initially install MOM Reporting, if you apply SP2
after you have installed MOM Reporting it should be fine. I just tried this
and then added some new reports from a management pack and it worked fine.
The link below also has this quote that seems to confirm this
"With MOM 2005 Service Pack 1, you can use SQL 2000 Reporting Services SP2,
which is independent of service packs for SQL Server 2000."
